My TTRPG life began in the early 1980s with solo play, when I was 8 years old, and then morphed into group play when I started high school. I’ve been doing both, in various forms, ever since. In 2025 I decided to start a Substack project.

I’ve been playing TTRPGs on my own, and turning the resulting adventures into short stories for this Substack, for 4 months now. I thought it might be time to sit back and list some of the things that I have learned during this intensive solo play era. It seems especially pertinent to do so as there appears to have been a spike in interest in solo play recently … or perhaps it only seems that way due to my current fixation on it!
