This was the most fun I’ve had so far with my solo play experiments for story writing … and that honestly surprised me. At first, I wasn’t sure how to approach EZD6 for a solo game. Then I rolled a few design prompts and set about building my own EZD6 adventure module, following the style of DM Scotty’s Book of Quests. All you need is a simple scenario, a handful of NPCs, a few monsters, and a d20 table of flavorful discoveries. From there, solo play becomes simple if you railroad the story … which is not always a bad thing, folks.

But let’s go back to the start:

Using EZD6 to roll adventure design prompts

Most EZD6 quests include two types of monsters: a minor threat and a big bad. I followed that structure and rolled twice on the d20 EZD6 monster list from the core book. Then I added some spice with the d6 encounter twist and battle twist tables though, in the end, I only used one of those prompts to shape the final design.

Next, I turned to the NPC creator to breathe life into a few characters connected to the quest. Again, I didn’t need everything I rolled, but those prompts gave me the seeds of some useful personalities.

The final pieces of the puzzle came from rolls for the lair’s aspect and location, along with the special buff for the BBEG. At that point, I had enough material to sketch out a clear, punchy scenario. One thing became obvious. I’d need to run at least two characters if I wanted any chance of quest success!
